Our History

From a 19th-century residence to a beloved boutique hotel, the Terry House embodies over 170 years of Delaware history and hospitality.

1851

Howell J. Terry and his wife Rebecca Pippin purchased the 61-foot lot on Delaware Street, beginning their vision for a family home.

1860 - Civil War Era

Terry began construction on his home in 1860, just before the Civil War. Construction halted during the war and completed soon after, making this home a witness to America's most pivotal moment.

1916 & World War Era

At Terry's death, the property sold to the New Castle Century Club, organized for civic improvement. The club used the first floor for club purposes and operated the upper floors as room rentals. During World War I, the Terry House provided support for the Red Cross. In WWII, the club helped in the war effort with bandage rolling, nutrition, first aid training classes, and civil defense meetings.

1951 - The Williams Era

The club sold the building to George and Bessie Williams, who used it as their residence until 1985, maintaining its charm and character through the latter half of the 20th century.

1985 - The Deemer Family

The Deemer family acquired the property and renovated it into a bed and breakfast, introducing hospitality back to the Terry House and sharing its historic charm with guests.

2023 - The Egerton Family & Today

The Egerton family purchased the property in January 2023 from the Deemer family. It needed love and renovation, and with help from the whole family, we were able to update, restore, and breathe new life into an Old New Castle landmark.
